Rooted Futures | Image, Sound, and Activism in the Work of Dibal Ranuh & Navicula
Rooted in tradition yet boldly contemporary, this talk and screening explores the meeting point of film, music, and activism through the work of director Dibal Ranuh.
The session features three music clips directed by Ranuh for Bali-based activist band Navicula, produced by Kitapoleng Production. Known for their outspoken engagement with social and environmental issues, Navicula’s music finds a powerful visual counterpart in Ranuh’s distinctive directorial approach—one that fuses progressive contemporary aesthetics with deep respect for cultural roots and local wisdom.
Through discussion and screening, the evening explores how image and sound can work together to uphold ideals, provoke awareness, and give form to resistance. Ranuh shares insights into his creative process, his visual language, and the specific edges of his directorial style—where experimentation meets tradition, and storytelling becomes a tool for social reflection.
More than a presentation, the talk is an invitation to consider how visual culture can amplify music’s message, and how art can remain grounded while speaking urgently to the present.
